All throughout this novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles Gene Forresters personality straddles the attributes of the two rivers These two rivers are the Devon River and The Naguamsett The rivers contrast each other greatly The Devon River is described as being basically calm clean it has some trees along the edges The water is fresh water The river passes through the hills the school the highland farms and the forest The way Gene may be like this river is how he is book smart he idolizes Finny and just Goes with the flow An example is when Finny wants to go to the tree and Gene wants to study Finny talks him into going to the tree that is an example of Gene going with the flow A dam separates the two rivers and this dam is the line gene is straddling figuratively The Naguamsett River is described as ugly marshes mud and seaweed The water is salt water The waters are rough and the river is larger The way Gene may be like this river is he intentionally jounces the limb He doubts Finny good intentions and he always is looking to ruin Finnys reputation I believe Gene is much more like the Naguamsett river because during this book Gene displays more rough and rugged characteristics Some examples of this is when in Chapter 2 Gene is jealous that Finny is able to get away with so many things that he himself would ordinarily be punished for Also when is Chapter 3 The jealousy Gene has towards Finny extends towards all of the students at Devon School where the entire atmosphere is founded upon competition in its sports and academics alike In Chapter 4 Forrester decides that Finny is as jealous of him as he is of Finny thinking that he has intentionally tried to make Gene do poorly in his classes In Chapter 5 Finny is hostile towards Gene after
