Albert Schweitzers Bioethical Views Albert Schweitzer appears to take an extremely ecocentric view in his passage entitled The Ethic of Reverence for Life He feels in a bioethical sense that it is good to maintain and cherish life and evil to destroy and to check life Schweitzer 1976a It is his contention that a truly ethical person will go out of their way to assist nature in any way that they can Since we are a part of nature humans have a responsibility with regard to everything that has life Schweitzer 1976b This is why Schweitzer hoped people would be motivated by his words if for no other reason than an inborn profound respect for our environment and all of its diverse inhabitants A hope as sizable as this one does seem rather improbable though even to Schweitzer However he submits an explanation that a reverence for life denotes something which never lets go its hold of the man in whose thought it has once found a place Schweitzer 1976c Basically he is stating that although common man is normally unconcerned with the state of the environment our conscience can force us to deal with those issues from time to time This can prove true although we may question why we should bother caring at all The world is after all dependent on one organism surviving at the expense of another Schweitzer 1976d We humans test products and medical treatments on animals to further our well-being so why cant we take the time to help an animal in need when the situation arises This is precisely why Albert Schweitzer wrote his passage in the hopes that people would begin to consider what weve been doing to the earth throughout our short existence in relation to the existence of the planet is wrong Schweitzer explains that his position is a result of becoming capable of reflection about the totality of existence Schweitzer 1976e He just
