No artist writes history An artist gives his play reason and meaning making history more entertaining therefore we learn An artist does not care about what happened but how he can make history entertaining Arthur Millers play is not history in the sense in which the word is used by the academic historian meaning he has changed the word history Miller tells how he is different from an academic historian which is engendering The Crucible to be fiction You cannot write history it has to be made Not even an academic historian can write history Miller gives the play a new aspect and likeness The artist elucidates history and puts it in a new image that better clarifies history Arthur Miller deciphers the historical facts and breaks them down into a story which relates to human nature Artists consistently alter his work due to seeing human experience The play is a dramatic re-enactment of the Salem Witch Trials in Massachusetts in 1692 Albeit the play is based on real events it is not history Miller changed the ages of characters and amalgamates several historical figures so that there are fewer actors on stage Miller aimed to use the Salem Witch Trials as an allegory about the anti-communist Red Scare and the congressional hearings of Sen Joseph McCarthy happening in the United States at the time The Crucible is bent in another politically arraigned time in US history The Salem witch trials that led to the accusation and hanging of many people People of the Massachusetts town were arrested and coerced to admit their own criminality and tattle on others Like in the novel animal farm by George Orwell which is another form of allegory In the novel the animals on the farm overthrow the humans and take over running the place This exhibits events leading up to the Stalin era in Russia So the farm politics represent real politics There is another story called
