In Arthur Millers The Crucible the selfish and cowardly John Proctor makes an un-heroic pathetic decision to abandon his family and be hanged All in an effort to escape his peers and the embarrassment he might endure John Proctor is selfish to allow himself to be hanged If John confesses to taking part in relations with the devil his life will be spared He would be able to live and carry out his duties to his family Proctor doesnt want his good name to be blackened by confessing that he does the devils work How may I live with out my name Says John Proctor His name is far more important to him than his wife and children People that love him care for him and judge him only for who he is He cares more that his name not be tarnished than his family being left without a father and husband He says that I lie and sign myself to lies He makes the claim that he would be lying of he signed and allowed the confession to be posted People lied to get him in that spot They lied that he had relations with the devil So what does it matter if he lies himself to save his life He is so selfish that he makes the excuse that he cant lie just because he doesnt want his good name to be hurt That attitude is one of a man who cares not of others even his loved ones but of himself only He is not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang as he said Proctor tears up the confession and dies protecting his name Because it is my name States the selfish John Proctor John Proctor is also a coward for allowing him self to be hanged He is a coward because he is willing to die protecting his name but not willing to live to protect
