Bruce Dawes Poems and the Society around him Through Bruce Dawes poems he has commented on the society around him through the three poems The flashing of Badges Enter Without So Much as Knocking and Life-cycle In his poem The Flashing of Badges he talked about a derelict that lived on the streets Everyone that came past who were different to each other such as if you were in the army he would say Im an old digger myself implying that he was in the army as well Or if you are catholic then of course he is as well doing this just to try to have the same interest as you do so that you would like him and give him some spare change But if you cut him off during his conversation with you and just give him some money then he will do him some harm He just wants you too listen to him and give him some spare change In the poem Enter Without So Much as Knocking Bruce Dawes is trying to portray an insignificance of a life lived in modern society It talks about several factors in contemporary life which inhibit mans growth to maturity and the formation of his identity eg the media and materialism The poem takes us through the mans life from when he was first born to when he was in his grave It talks about the society around him such as Bobby Dazzler on Channel 7 when he was first born but hearing that on TV at that age didnt mean anything to him but when he got older it would of appealed to him Also all of the commands laws and signs telling you what to do in the poem when Mum took him shopping when she had won the Lucks A Fortch Tricky Tune Quiz showed to everyone in what the modern era has changed
