Cabaret The Cabaret is a musical that takes place in the Kit Kat Club in Berlin in 1931 during Hitlers rise to power The 2 main characters-Sally Bowles Brian Roberts- were both Americans who traveled to Berlin with seperate dreams Sally has high hopes and desires to move up the entertainment ladder She lives each day hoping to break into the movies and each night performing at the Kit Kat Club Brian is hunting for German students to whom he can teach English-to pay his rent The setting of Cabaret pre-war Germany in inherently fascinating because of the events occurring and what they led to Society on all levels is in a state of instability with extreme behavior being demonstrated in the political commercial and sexual areas This atmosphere of upheaval is extremely attractive to Sally because it provides her with somewhere that barriers can be broken Fuelled by selfishness and a desire to better herself she is content to sleep around use others and do almost anything in pursuit of success This hard shell is a mere impression though and is easily punctured when things dont turn out quite right and events spiral out of her control In an analogous fashion the nightclub maintains a similar illusion-that life on the inside is beautiful while chaotic and disorderly outside The songs of Cabaret take this chaos one step further Through effective application of an assortment of scenes the stage routines provide a counterpart to real life drama On example is when Fritz a money hungry German and Natalie a wealthy Jewish woman fall in love the song If you could See Her is played on stage at the Cabaret The Master of ceremonies dances with a gorilla professing his love of her to the audience The last line of the song reads if you could see her through my eyes she wouldnt look Jewish at all Here it seems that
