Communication is one of the most important parts of ones everyday life The way one expresses hisherself in actions and words paints a picture for all around to see Earnest Hemmingway focuses on one couples inhibition to declare their true feelings on a very controversial subject The couple the American and the girl are now at a train station crossroads Each holds a different opinion but dares not share it with the other He reveals his theme through a series of dialogue and very little narration but similar to the couple he is very abstract in his writing therefore the reader must focus on little details Due to their separation in age and experience the lack of conversation seems to be intensified First Hemmingway refers to them as the American and the girl By doing this Hemmingway creates certain characteristics for each The American is superior because he is the older of the two Not only is he older but he is more experienced also The fact that he speaks Spanish shows that he has traveled before and has seen more of the world On the other hand the girl equates the taste of the drinks with the taste of licorice Her childish thoughts distance her from the sophisticated manner of this travelling man This alienation inhibits them from discussing the matter at hand which of course the author has not yet revealed So they continue to drink and squabble with one another as shown in the passages dealing with the absinthe and hills This established characteristic of innocence could also be seen as gullibility During their conversations the American subtly attempts to persuade the young lady to having the abortion He states Its really not an operation at all and although it seems that she is fearful of going through with it she does not express her disapproval Her gullibility has caused her to trust this man who obviously is only worried
