Cultural DifferencesFamily Struggles in Seventeen Syllables These days it seems as though too many of us take for granted the hardships and struggles that occurred in our families pasts Even people in the lowest social class are treated with more respect than before Rosies family does have their share of differences within their family When cultures collide negative outputs are given It seems as though the Hayashi family each has their own thing going on and they arent willing to spend time with the rest of the family members In Seventeen Syllables there are instances of symbolism and inner family struggles that draw each member further and further apart First of all Mrs Hayashis passion for writing the poems of haiku has basically caused the most problems with Rosie and her father Rosie often didnt know the meaning of her mothers poems So this resulted in a failure of communication between the two Rosie is a lazy kid She preferred English over Japanese which also created a dead end road when she began reading her mothers poems Rosie hasnt matured fully in my opinion And she just needs to spend a little more time with her mother and her passion The thing that made the story interesting was Rosies fathers jealousy and irritation of Mrs Hayashi Mr Hayashi was irritated when his wife and her friend were sipping tea and discussing haiku at their house He seems to think she is engulfed in these poems and has absolutely no time for anything or anyone else She becomes an introvert while spending time writing Mr Hayashi became so frustrated that he told Rosie they were going home and Mrs Hayashi didnt know why Rosie was so upset at both of her parents She
