Should Depictions of Violence in the Media Be More Heavily Censored In todays society the media is becoming more lenient with censoring the violence portrayed in music lyrics or television The question we need to ask is whether the material shown to younger audiences need to be monitored more closely Some believe this is having a negative impact on our youth influencing them to be more violent towards each other Alternatively one can argue that it is the responsibility of the parents to look after their children and decide what they can and can not watch or listen to or whether the explicit material will even influence their children in the slightest There are a large number of reasons and sufficient evidence that the media is taking violence too lightly and needs to take actions in protecting the children who will make up our future society Recent studies show that children will see 200000 acts of violence before their eighteenth birthday 16000 of which will be murders Such extreme amounts of violence must have some impact on children Many of these violent incidents may already have censors on them such as ratings preventing people under certain ages from viewing such violent actions Assessments of children have proven that for boys especially higher ratings do not prevent them watching but rather make the material more appealing for them Also tests show that children spend more time learning about life through the media that in any other manner The average child spends approximately 28 hours a week watching television which is twice as much as they spend in school What are our children learning if they are watching violence taken so lightly in unrealistic scenarios in fictional story lines Video games are becoming more and more violent A recent successful game is Grand Theft Auto A simulation game where the player is a young male criminal out for revenge The game includes stealing
