Are we Drugging Americas Youth Ever since Psychiatrists first gave name to Attention Deficit Disorder or ADHD as it is commonly called there has been controversy surrounding it There are those who believe that the disease does not even exist that it is just an excuse for unruly behavior This is not the case ADHD is a very real mental disorder and according to the National Institute of Mental Health it affects 3 to 5 percent of all children perhaps as many as 2 million American children Two to three times more boys than girls are affected On average at least one child in every class room in the United States needs help for the disorder In light of these facts the question now becomes what is the best way to treat this disorder Here is where the most vehement debate begins even the experts disagree All we as parents and educators can do is weigh the pros and cons in order to make an informed decision about what method of treatment is best for each child which considering the plethora of information available can be a dauntless task There is so much information voicing both the pros and cons to medicating ADHD available that one must wade through the myths misinformation and actual facts to make a somewhat concise decision The most widely prescribed treatment for ADHD is the use of stimulant drugs In 1988 over half a million children were taking stimulants and an estimate says that at least four times that many are being medicated today Merrow report The objections to the use of stimulants are many the reasons varied and valid Those who oppose the use of stimulants such as Ritalin the most commonly prescribed stimulant in the treatment of ADHD are not uneducated people or people unaware of the facts A well known Psychiatrist and Author Dr Peter Breggin states I believe there is no scientific reason or justification
