Edgar Allan Poes message in The Tell -Tale Heart is nonlinear Thementally ill dreams and nightmares are not logical in the standardlinear way of thinking Apparently the narrator is struggling because hecomes straight out and states the disease has sharpened my senses Also like dreaming our senses can appear extraordinary The narratordoes not seem to have the cognitive connection between right and wrongsimilar to the chaos of a dream or nightmare A nightmare may seemwrong by all linear accounts but being a dream it may very well be thatthe subconscious is struggling to work through some problem and thenightmare could serve as an abstract solution The narrators reassurance seems to come from his ability to plan outthe murder so stealthy There is no apparent reason why he would wantto murder this old man other than disliking his pale blue eye Therumination on this evil eye is also likened to the dream state asusually something has fermented before manifesting in our dreams Theirony here seems that perhaps the old mans vulture like eye couldsee the narrators intention and the narrator could no longer bare thethought of being seen from above However the narrator in his madnesshas separated the connection between the old man representing wisdom andhis evil eye and the guilt replacing the eye with the heightened soundof a heartbeat The only sanity found here is that the narrator realizes the old man hasdone nothing to deserve what fate will fall on him To justify themurder the narrator has to dissociate one from the other very much likein the dream state where the boundaries blur And only in a dreamwould there be no mess to clean up
