In the novel Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton there is a very simple yet personal style This author has written many great books but the style of this particular novel sets it apart from her contemparies Through her vivid descriptions symbolism and tragic message Edith Wharton portrays a significant personal style and creates a novel considered to be good literature First of all the fact that she extends 48 hours into nine chapters has got to say something about her style This may make the book sound boring and drawn out but its not Whartons style is extremely detailed Through her vivid descriptions of Ethan his sickly wife Zeena the barren town they live in and the radiant and beautiful Mattie Wharton walks you through the book and describes everything and everyone fully from the clothes someone is wearing to the way the sun is reflecting off their hair This allows the reader to sense and picture the setting and characters and feel like she is a part of the book This ties into the literary device of description allowing the reader to place themselves with the characters and feel what each is going through Some other literary devices that Wharton uses are irony flashback and symbolism Her ironic view of our world and her abhorrence of societys unbending standards of loyalty add to the ironic and emotional atmosphere of the novel She also contrasts colors of Zeena and Mattie showing how dark and black Zeena is to the vibrance of red Mattie These all add to the personal style of Edith Wharton Another aspect of her style is the tragic aspect From the very first page of the novel she ties tragedy into the main characters life Ethan Frome lives in Starkfield The name of the town itself depicts a boring tragic place to live Ethans parents have died and he marries this woman Zeena not for love but for stability This sickly dark
