FDRs New Deal Franklin Roosevelt started his presidency off with one of the most inspirational inaugural speeches declaring the only thing we have to fear is fear itself He brought an air of confidence and optimism that quickly rallied the people to the banner of his program known as the New Deal One of the most amazing things about the New Deal was the speed at which things were accomplished Not only was it fast and efficient but also it once again resurfaced the American interest in the government At the time Roosevelt took over the presidency the economy was in a state of turmoil millions of Americans were out of work and it would be anyones guess as to what would happen next Many economic political and social factors lead up to the New Deal There was 25 unemployment not to mention there was a report that 20 of New York school children were malnourished It was obvious that something had to be done change was necessary immediately When Roosevelt accepted his presidential nomination in 1932 he stated I pledge you I pledge myself to a new deal for the American people Roosevelts new deal set its targets on the three Rs These Rs included relief recovery and reform The immediate goals to be achieved included notion of relieving and recovering with a long-term goal of permanent recovery and reform The day after the 32nd president was sworn in he declared a four-day banking holiday from March5-9th 1933 5504 banks closed with deposits totaling almost 35 billion dollars An embargo on the exportation of gold silver and currency was also put into place without a license from the Treasury Dept In his first hundred days FDR achieved an incredible amount This span which ranged from March 9th-June 16th 1933 On March 9th the 73rd congress held a session which had the main purpose of immediate
