Food Labelling Laws Food labelling is currently regulated by the British Food and Drugs Act and Regulations which was passed in 1954 when the effects of undeclared trace amounts of food allergens were not fully explained Efforts are presently underway to make all food labelling safer for food-allergic people This is a case report article on what happens when the Labelling Laws are not obeyed CASE REPORT 1 A three and a half year old boy with eczema has a milk allergy that has caused vomiting sneezing and hives His father purchased a bag of tortilla chips after verifying that the labelled ingredients did not include milk The ingredients listed were corn vegetable oil colour and seasoning salt monosodium glutamate MSG The boy ate three tortilla chips and immediately experienced a burning sensation in the mouth and facial swelling He was treated with epinephrine in the emergency department of a nearby hospital The manufacturer was contacted and revealed that in addition to salt and MSG the seasoning contained milk products cheese onion powder garlic powder tomato powder imitation parsley and may also contain caramel and annato New laws on labelling foods which contain genetically modified GM additives have come into force in England and Scotland as part of a campaign by the new Food Standards Agency to reassure consumers The FSA which was launched recently said all foods and food ingredients which contain GM additives and flavourings would have to be labelled as would all products containing GM soya and maize in line with new European Union rules Similar regulations will come into force in Wales and Northern Ireland shortly it said I said at the agencys launch last week that we want to support consumer choice said Sir John Krebs chairman of the FSA I therefore very much welcome these new requirements which will further improve the ability of consumers to make informed choices The FSA
