Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Book Analysis The novel Frankenstein was written by Mary Shelley and first published in 1818 The story is about a man named Victor Frankenstein who created a monster and thus messed which nature which came back to haunt him When rejected by society the monster committed a series of murders to spite his creator The novel took place in Geneva Switzerland in the 1700s Victor Frankenstein lived in a house never Lake Geneva near the Jura Mountain range Victor Frankenstein had attended the University of Ingolstadt for three years As the plot begins an arctic explorer named Robert Walton finds a man adrift in the seas outside his boat He nursed the man back to health and finds he is Victor Frankenstein who tells the story of his life to Walton When Victor was young he was fascinated with life and wanted to bring a creature to life He attended the University of Ingolstadt and it was here that he became fascinated with anatomy and life He was very interested in natural philosophy and chemistry and tried to play God by creating life When he found the secret of activating dead flesh he created a being composed of rotting corpses However he became terrified of the creation and fled from it in terror Victor became mentally ill and did not know the whereabouts of the monster One day he received a letter which informed him that his younger brother William had been murdered A maid Justine Moritz that was also a close friend to the family was accused of the murder Victor knew that the monster had killed his brother but Justine was found guilty and hung nonetheless Victor felt responsible for both deaths and climbed high into the Jura Mountains behind his house only to find the monster The monster told Frankenstein that he had learned how to read and talk by watching a poor family He then
