Introduction Gas Chromatography GC is the most widely used analytical technique for the speciation and quantification of organic compounds The total cost for these analyses is enormous Protracted sample turnaround times which are common for contract laboratories cause expensive bottlenecks Dramatic reductions in analysis time could lead to significant economic advantages for applications involving environmental and chemical process monitoring This report considers several emerging technologies that have made high-speed GC HSGC practical and useful for a rapidly increasing range of applications Stragedies instruments and procedures are being developed for increasing the speed of capillary gas chromatography by a factor of a hundred or more This would make gas chromatography far more useful for chemical process monitoring general laboratory applications and environmental monitoring Completely automated instruments that are capable of generating 10000 chromatograms in a 24-h our period are used to implement stragedies and procedures for high-speed chemical analysis Efficiency of developing a new product and its manufacturing depends on how fast the analytical evaluation can be done on samples collected at various stages Thus fast analytical methods are a must especially in a plant environment to monitor the process of manufacturing without any major interruption Capillary gas chromatography GC has been extensively used to monitor volatile compounds in chemical manufacturing processes however the time required for GC runs is often the major factor in sample turn around time Reducing the GC analysis time would provide many benefits such as higher productivity lower cost and shorter turn around time for new product development and high speed GC has been the subject of interest in the last few years An analysis taken 30 minutes using conventional GC experimental conditions can possibly be reduced to 3-5 minutes by optimizing some of thes e conditions The current technology has the potential to reduce total run times to 30-90 seconds Basic theory of High Speed Gas Chromatography The tendency for a trade in resolution for speed
