Gender Role Identity 215-305 091401 Mini Project 1 Finding a gender role to violate was very difficult for me because I violate norms on a daily basis For example I love baseball cars and action movies I hate cooking housekeeping and dresses However I do enjoy a lot of the female aspects of life such as shopping talking on the phone for hours and receiving help when I have to carry armfuls of groceries One gender role that I never thought about until now is the way men are expected to act on a date A lot of the things they do on a date just seem natural and since its non-offensive no one is in a hurry to change it So for my project I decided to relieve my boyfriend of his chivalrous duties for an evening Instead of being the female I had to pick him up open all of the doors pull out his chair and order his food Even though we have a very equal relationship it seemed so awkward and unnatural It actually took a lot of conscious thought to remember what to do next The looks we received form the others in the restaurant led me to believe that they were thinking of my boyfriend as lazy and rude At first I was angry because they jumped to those conclusions with out taking the time to learn that he has a strong belief in the equality of men and women After a while I remembered how strange it felt for me to do everything that night So even in my mind until that evening the norm had not yet been erased For a lot of people especially older folks traditional habits are very difficult to change For a while I struggled to find a possible cause for this particular gender role Then I remembered seeing a special on television about how dating habits have changed in
