Over 500 years ago Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales a story of a group of people making a religious pilgrimage to Canterbury the death place of Thomas a Becket in 1170 and the stories that the pilgrims tell along the way In this story there are a handful of people that retain honorable traits Virtues those whose aspects were well respected at the time in which the story is set Opposite the honorable individuals are the pilgrims that maintain unhonorable traits Vices which at that time were considered to be sinful and generally anyone could be a possible factor leading to damnation To create the perfect man out of those whose traits are that of virtue of course the candidates to use out of all of the pilgrims on the trip would be the Knight the Squire the Oxford Cleric and the Parson It is the individual traits that these men possess that can make the virtuous man The most significant of all four of the virtuous would be the Knight He is fortuitous in the fact that he has ridden into battle no man more p 46 and has been to fought in many lands against the Moslems in the crusades He is a man of justice from the day on which he first began to ride abroad had followed chivalry truth honor generousness and courtesy p 47 He is also a man of reverence by his defending the holy land from infidels The Oxford Cleric is also a quite virtuous man He is charitable in the fact that he would take money from those that would give it to him pray for them in thanks use the money to buy books to read and study and then teach those lessons back to the people He is also a faithful man as the thought of moral virtue filled his speech p 53 As well as the previous virtues the Cleric is also a
