Grey Owl A Result of Stereotypes The movie Grey Owl involves a man named Archie whose desire to be an Indian was so great that he abandoned all truth about himself in order to live a typical Indian life After observing Archie Grey Owl I realized that what he was really living was a stereotypical Indian life Archie first created a physical image for himself of a stereotypical Indian He grew his hair long dyed it black and always kept it braided Although many Indians may have had long hair or kept their hair in braids I am sure that some did not There were probably many Indians who had short hair and who did not wear their hair in braids Another stereotypical image Archie displayed was Indian clothing made with tassels and beading and included a headdress made entirely of real eagle feathers I am also sure not all Indians wore beads and feathers on their heads There must have been some that just wore jeans or maybe even collared shirts Second Archie based his life upon the lives of stereotypical Indians Archie lived in the forest and owned only what he built with his own hands or caught through trapping He was a hunter and gatherer On many occasions he would visit his Indian tribe and join them in dancing a Powwow Although he was white Archie spoke as if he resented and even hated the white man When people thought of Indians they thought of uneducated superstitious men dancing around a fire humming while large drums were being played First of all not all Indians lived in the forest I am sure that many had jobs out of the wilderness in the city People saw Indians as being one with the earth and living together in peace and harmony but like any group of human beings there must have been some Indians who were violent and who
