Gullivers Travels was written in 1726 in a Middle English style by Jonathan Swift It is an account of four different voyages by a man named Lemuel Gulliver In his first voyage he is captured by the Lilliputians a tiny race of people who keep Gulliver as a slave and teach him their language Gulliver sees the Lilliputians as small people and not as inferior beings While on the second voyage he encounters a giant race of people called Brobdingnags who keep Gulliver as a pet for a farmers daughter Unlike Gulliver and the Lilliputians the Brobdingnags do not see Gulliver as a small Brobdingnag they see him as a small rodent but Gulliver sees the Brobdingnags as big people On his third voyage Gulliver in not captured he visits and observes the countries of Laputa and Balnibarbi and he also visits Japan On Gullivers fourth voyage he is captured by the Houyhnhnms who are talking horses that depict the perfect being While with the Houyhnhnms he also encounters the Yahoos who are exactly like Gulliver except in Gullivers mind they are far less civilized than he or the Houyhnhnms Gulliver thinks that he is a better person than the Yahoos and thinks of them as trash While held captive by three different cultures Gulliver compares himself with them which helps him identify the flaws and strong points of his character While in the possession of the Lilliputians and the Brobdingnags the good qualities of Gullivers character are revealed Though the Lilliputians are smaller than Gulliver he acknowledges that they are a very advanced civilization Gulliver could have gone off flaunting the glory of England but instead he listened to the emperor and compared England to Lilliput At one point he could have left Lilliput with out resistance but he chose to stay and help them fight Belfuscu Gulliver is given as a pet to the daughter of the farmer who found him Although he
