1 Dustin Kunnanz English 1213 TR 200 1-31-01 The Wrong Idea From the beginning universities were a place to go for higher learning a scholarly education The universities teach their knowledge they have gained over the years to people willing to learn The essay Job One Education by Joanne Jacobs talks about how colleges and universities are not teaching students what employers are demanding The employers Jacobs talked about are fast growing technology businesses You are not supposed to get this training in college College degrees are based on a scholarly education not a technological one College degrees basically educate on a very broad level They give you the knowledge to go into a wide variety of job fields You can look at it in this perspective just because you graduate with a degree in accounting does not mean you have to be an accountant You might end up working for a marketing firm With college degrees giving you a basic understanding of a lot of different areas this enables you not to be tied down to a specific job and employers know this That is why the having the college degree is so important For example if you just go to a vocational school you will be trained in one area so when you apply for a job employers will know that you can most likely only do that specific job Colleges and universities can be specialty schools if and only if you choose to continue your education after gaining your first degree Many 2 people think that four or five years of college is all you need to be successful well they are wrong Any company out there has some sort of training they will put you through So you will always be learning It may not be in a classroom but you are still learning Every promotion requires more learning and some require you to head back to college to
