In Immanuel Kant s view main idea that gives an action moral worth is not the outcome that is achieved by the action but the motive that behind the action thus he points out the importance of duty He tried to use his theory of deontological to discover the rational principle which means categorical imperative grounding all other ethical judgments while in Mills Utilitarianism he tries to prove that the value of utilitarianism as a moral theory Mill defines the utilitarianism as a theory that based on the principle actions are right in the proportion as they tend to promote happiness wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness Even both of their respective have strengths and weaknesses Kants deontological give a more valuable contribution to our ethical lifeFirstly we need to understand the theory of Kants duty Kant believes that there was a supreme principle of morality and he refers to it as The Categorical Imperative In addition he mentions that duty only comes from categorical imperatives Finally he suggests there are three formulations of categorical imperativesAct only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time wills that it would become a universal law Also act as if the maxim of your actions were to become through a universal law of natureIn the other words when you are considering doing something ask yourself that what rule are you going to follow when you do the act Will you wan this rule to become a universal rule that everyone applies in his lifeAct in such a way that you treat humanity whether in your own person or in the person of another always at the same time as an end and never simply as a means This basically means that we should treat people as intrinsically valuable but not a mean for some purposes because unlike objects human have dignity As a result according to these theories
