Ind Aff by Fay Weldon is a story about a student who is in love with her professor named Peter Peter cares about her but does not do the necessary things to show that this is a serious relationship The reader can see that the character of the female narrator does not stick up for herself in many aspects of this relationship By the end of the story it is evident that the female narrator is a dynamic character because she starts out as an immature character then changes into a more mature character The relationship between the narrator and peter appears to be an awkward one right from the start of the story She is in this relationship for the wrong reasons and these reasons have a direct role in the way Peter treats her The narrator says He was supervising my thesis on varying concepts of moralityI was dependant upon him for my academic future 165 Her being dependent on him for such a huge thing like her thesis makes it seem like this is why she is in the relationship in the first place It seems that peter might feel that he has leverage over her because of this The narrator shows the reader just how immature she really is at the beginning of the story by being with Peter for status purposes She talks about how tall and handsome he is and that she loved to be seen with him 167 She likes the fact that she is in a relationship with someone who is not only handsome but is also very intelligent This stems from a competition between her and her younger sister Clare The narrator is somewhat jealous of her sister because she is married to a Harvard professor and had received her first degree at only twenty She is jealous of what her sister has accomplished academically and romantically in her life She is involved with
