The Article I choose for this assignment was entitled Jocks Nerds Babes and Thugs A Research Note On Regional Differences in Adolescent Gender Norms By JJill Suitor and Rebecca S Carter 1The thesis for this study is that regional differences do play a part in how there are gender norms for boys and girls The hypothesis is that there would be greater gender differences in adolescents avenues to prestige among Southerners than Northerners given the more traditional attitudes found among Southern adults The independent variable would be gender differences while the dependent variable if regional differences 2The authors had found that much of the literature that they had studied went in favor of their hypothesis Much of the research had been done only on adults so they decided to take it a step down and focus on adolescents and make it more specific as to who they were discussing They did find even in the adult research there was some discussion of adolescent behavior and norms being based on regional differences 3The basic underlying theory that they keep on using is that there will be much more different gender norms in the North and South and it can be seen in adolescents that does carry over I to adulthood They give the example that boys in the South are much more likely to acquire prestige through violence sports and sociability While girls in the South are much more likely to gain prestige through sociability popularity with the opposite sex and more physical appearance They want to support and show this is true throughout their research So they did conduct this study using some 1 755-college students collected thorough the 1997-98 academic school year There were three schools in the North used and two from the South used in this study Using these schools and students they were able to better understand the regional differences that the people selected in the study did face as
