Charlotte Brontes Jane Eyre is a passionately written tale of a real and extraordinary soul As the protagonist of the novel Jane is beautifully human exquisitely flawed and yet truly noble Born into an unloving world with rejection and anger at every corner Jane is forced to battle against the constraints of a cruel guardian a harsh employer and a rigid social order that circumscribe her life In reading this novel I found the incredible growth that Jane undergoes in her attempt to defy such constraints to be one of the most intriguing aspects Dubbed plain throughout her life Jane astoundingly matures from a miserable child into a compassionate woman a transformation that symbolizes the hope and desire for happiness in all of us and makes Jane a character that just about anyone could relate to Also what really moved me about this book is how confident and comfortable Jane is with herself although she has no money or station in life To stay true to her heart and passions she would rather earn her simple living as a governess than wed only for money a man that would not respect her In fact I believe that this novel is not about developing a relationship with a romantic lover but about learning to follow and live in tune with your own moral conscience which is exactly what Jane accomplishes With such spirit and great courage she becomes the type of person that everyone strives to be yet unfortunately knowingly can probably never become Only on the surface is Jane Eyre a love story underneath it is marked by a stark realism and a pervasive sense of eternal misery Never considering myself a romance-book lover I found pleasure in finding that the novel actually incorporates all genres from romance to suspense mystery to drama A narrative brimming with repressed emotion and dark secrets Brontes Jane Eyre explores the idea of social constraints and the powers
