The play Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare is mainly based around the assassination of Julius Caesar The character in charge of the assassination was the plays tragic hero Marcus Brutus Brutus was a highly respected figure in Rome He was a loyal follower and devout friend to Caesar This seems kind of ironic because why would someone murder one of his good friends Marcus Brutus is a very complex character In my paper I will examine Brutus and attempt to gain a deeper understanding of his character Before you can understand the actions of Brutus you must take a closer look at his character I believe that Brutus was overall a good person His involvement in the assassination was not out of hate or envy like so many of the other conspirators He was very sincere and pure in most of actions Brutus truly believed that the assassination of Julius Caesar was for the good of Rome That is the only reason why he decided to join the conspirators Brutuss part in the assassination was not out of envy or hate because all of the other conspirators wanted to kill Marc Antony as well Brutus was the one who persuaded them not to This is apparent in the line where Brutus says For Antony is but a limb of Caesar Let us be sacrificers but not butchers Caius Act 2 Scene 1 Lines 166-168 Brutus does possess some traits that are detrimental to himself and the rest of the conspirators Brutus appears to be an extremely naive person He believes in the essential goodness of everyone around him This is apparent in the following lines Only be patient till we have appeased the multitude beside themselves with fear and then we deliver you the cause why I that did love Caesar when I struck him have thus proceeded Act III Scene I Lines 179- 183 He believes that the actions of Cassius and the rest
