The short story Ms Brill by Katherine Mansfield tells us of a character whose nature and temperament is very different Ms Brill is a very sentimental person by nature but she her usual temperament is very insecure and self-conscious The love and care she gave the fox fur shows how much it meant to her Mansfield describes the fur with such detail that we can almost feel the love Ms Brill feels for it The fur was the only way she felt comfortable in displaying her personality to the public The fur makes her feel better about herself because she could finally bring out her nature what she really feels inside and who she is as an individual When she wears the fur she imagines as though she was an actress starring in the dramatic presentation of human life The world evolved around her and she feels great The fur gives her the security to do what she wants because she feels like a better person when wearing it Her usual temperament of isolation and self-consciousness is no longer felt with the fur The fur gives Ms Brill a false sense of security from which she conjures a fantasy world she lives in The fantasy world however comes crashing to an end as she listens in on a young couple who insults her fur Because she was able to expose her basic nature with the fur the insult was very devastating They did not insult her usual temperament but insulted her true personality the person she was with the fur on She had placed all her insecurities onto the fur went out on a limb The insult to her fur was an insult to herself When Ms Brill put on the fur it was not her own usual insecure and self-conscious temperament that showed it was her basic natural personality to let her be proud of herself that was brought out When she got back
