The first two lines of a poem from J R R Tolkeins The Lord of the Rings read All that is gold does not glitter Not all those who wander are lost In our walk of life we often tend to find ourselves wandering a seemingly hopeless desolate wasteland but are we lost Or just going through a necessary process which eventually results in finding the path that we truly want to take Katie Roiphes anthology In Praise of Messy Lives feature a montage of Roiphes binary personalities some of them give prominence to her individuality as a divorcee involved with hedonistic sexual activities drinking parties or other activities for grown-ups while others represent her motherhood as a parent of two children from two different fathers Throughout her essays Roiphe a divorced headstrong single mother seems to be wandering around in bog of the classical dichotomy between individuality and parenthood trying to find her way to acceptance and happiness Upon an examination of her book she is revealing that her constant wandering is in fact the passage of life a journey for formulating a distinctive persona by mingling the seemingly contradictory two charactersRoiphe first lays out her individuality the messy part that is prefigured during her early adulthood when she was in college In Beautiful Boy Warm Night Roiphe narrates a story when she slept with an unofficial boyfriend of her friend Stella She justifies her love affair saying people didnt belong as absolutely to other people then There was a kind of fluidity to our world 51 This fluidity left Roiphe oblivious to her irresponsible behavior and let her justifying her love affair solely based on her juvenile naivet She portrays herself as someone who took things lightly and makes a bold claim that the sex itself is forgettable 53 52 These short yet bold statements clearly suggest the atmosphere of Roiphes volatile individuality Regardless of her declaration that her sense of morality shifted
