Mark Edmundson wrote the article On The Uses of a Liberal Education in Harpers magazine to make aware to the readers of the magazine that more and more universities are marketing themselves to prospective students in an attempt to outdo each other This just proves that consumerism is very much present in todays world and is here to stay No matter what kind of business or lack there of there will always be this marketing strategy of trying to advance ones self in the world As someone once told Edmundson Colleges dont have admissions offices anymore they have marketing departments44 He should be commended when he writes that students are not to be held responsible for the way colleges are being marketed to them On the contrary even if they are not responsible for that they should be held responsible for buying into them Students need to take some responsibility in their own education because they are not going to have mom and dad making their decisions for them for the rest of their lives Part of going off to college is learning how to take on responsibility I agree with Edmundsons thought that the parents are at fault because they tend to shelter the kids throughout their lives which leaves them unprepared for college life If universities are successfully marketing themselves to students then they should keep up their marketing strategies The ways that universities use alluring devices to attract students is ingenious because it allows them to get what they need and a little in excess too College students want and get what they pay for even if that includes new dorms renovated or new student unions and new athletic facilities Instead of focusing on their academic accreditations colleges tend to zero in on the social aspects that come along with the university The Ivy League schools seem to be the only ones that zero in on education and not sports and social
