Of Mice and Men The controversial book Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck is often challenged and sometimes even banned from the reading curriculum in high schools Although the book uses foul language racial slurs looks down upon women and shows cruelty to both humans and animals the morals and inside thoughts of these characters are extremely redeeming The loyalty George shows towards Lennie the realistic point of view this novel displays and the positive impact it has upon the reader definitely outweigh all of the negative aspects of the novel Despite the fact that this reading material greatly controversial the redeeming qualities support that this novel should be put into the reading curriculum of all high school students The loyalty George provides to Lennie is quite remarkable Lennie and George are complete opposites Lennie is mentally handicapped and is a very large man George on the other hand is described as small and quick In spite of the fact that they are quite different from each other they form a family like bond The night before George and Lennie head to the ranch they are planning to work on they decide to camp outside George gets angry with Lennie and says some harsh words to him in a fit of rage Well we aint got any George exploded Whatever we aint got thats what you want God amighty if I was alone I could live so easy I could go get a job an work an no trouble No mess at all and when the end of the month come I could take my fifty bucks and go into town and get whatever I want Steinbeck 11 Lennie then feels unwanted so begins to explain that he could go off away and find a cave if George does not want him Well I could I could go off in the hills there Some place Id find a cave Steinbeck 12George then
