At the end of the story the narrator states This was the beginning of compassion and one cannot have both compassion and innocence By this she means that it is impossible to be aware of the suffering someone is going through while at the same time judging them only by what they are on the outside Lizabeth is a black girl who is almost 15 years old She lives with both of her parents and her 11-year-old brother in what she remembers now as a small dusty town Everyone who lives there is affected by extreme poverty but since they have no other life to compare theirs to they dont realize it All of the children who live near her play together all summer long but this year Lizabeth never feels up to the games they used to play One day her younger brother Joey suggests that they all go to Miss Lotties house to annoy her and her son and even Liz thinks its a great idea Miss Lottie lives in a broken down old home which Lizabeth calls a monument to decay Everything about the home is depressing except a bright bunch of marigolds which Miss Lottie keeps in perfect condition The whole point of making the trip to her house was to play a sort of game that they had invented in which they are to taunt Miss Lottie and her queer-headed son to the point where they would in trouble and run away This time they cruelly throw rocks at the marigolds as Miss Lottie is tending to them and break the heads off a few Lizabeth decides to take it a step further to prove to the other children she isnt scared and storms out of her hiding spot towards
