Oppression is the mistreatment of one group of people whether knowingly or unknowingly by another group of people in which there is an imbalance of strong power A good example of oppression is described by Tommi Avicolli He Defies You Still represents to the methodical way in which psychological colonization physically violent are directed at particular groups targeted for oppression It often appears to happen to one person alone but actually occurs on a societal and institutionalized level to all people belonging to that same targeted group According to HJ there are four elements of oppression which show a relationship between an agent group and a target group The first element identified by HJ is The agent group has the power to define and name reality and determine what is normal real or correct1 It often occurs when the agent group speaks to the target group According to Tommi Avicolli the boy sits and is reading a book He does not wants the other classmate to know he is sitting classroom He does not look up and even says anything Unfortunately someone says Hey youre a faggot arent you 2 The boy who is involved in the target group is afraid of speak his opinion to the others who is involved in the agent group Therefore the scene one shows that the agent group has the power to define and determine what is real and correct as calling to a faggot The second element identified by HJ is that unequal treatments which is harassment discrimination exploitation marginalization are institutionalized and systematic According to scene three by Tommi Avicolli his lunch bag is grabbed and tossed to another table and someone opens it and confiscates a package of Tastykakes another boys takes the sandwich3 He does not report this crime and it does not even annoy him anymore It is certain that oppression can only exist when there is an institutional power imbalance
