Times have changed For many years the American people have been immersed in a heated debate about racism due to the multi-cultural and ethnic differences Many were frightened uneducated and ignorant to learn about others and turned to discrimination as a solution to their social and economic difficulties In his essay The Fire Next Time James Baldwin shared his life predicaments and some racial dilemmas that occurred in the mid-1900s He asserted that people were mistreated because of their nationality beliefs andor differences In addition there was much hatred lack of understanding and segregation among the people However the American people today are quite different from the Americans that Baldwin described Through time as well as social and economic conditions most people learned to accommodate the different aspects of cultures and accept one another They are aware of the existence of diversity and try to work together to make America a better country for themselves and their surroundings Yet there are a number of people who remain racist but this number is not as great compared to fifty years ago To illustrate Baldwin used a familiar event that many people have performed sometime in their life which was having a friend come over to the house And quite frequently most parents would ask their children about their friend out of curiosity In Baldwins case his father questioned Is he a Christian Baldwin pg 37 In return Baldwin replied No Hes Jewish 37 As a result his father slapped Baldwin The consequence of this occurrence was not surprising considering the fact that it happened during the time period when people were not sharing schools drinking fountains or experiencing any type of equal rights People were segregated and tended to socialize among the people that shared the same ethnic language andor religion The fact that they were separated many people were unfamiliar with other peoples presence and were not provided with the opportunity to
