One Fat Summer Robert Lipsyte Biography Robert Lipsyte grew up in New York City and attended Columbia University He worked as a sports reporter for the New York Times from 1959 to1967 and as a sports columnist from 1967 to 1971 In 1964 he began covering professional boxing most particularly the rise of Muhammad Alis career He used those experiences as the basis for his first young adult novel The Contender today widely considered a classic in the relatively new field of young adult literature The Contender still enjoys a wide readership among teens nearly 35 years after its initial publication Two other novels about boxing followed with The Brave and The Chief In addition to sports novels Mr Lipsyte has written an autobiographical trilogy about three summers in the life of an adolescent boy in One Fat Summer Summer Rules and The Summerboy This year Robert Lipsyte won the Margaret A Edwards Award from the American Library Associations Young Adult Library Services Award for his lifetime contribution to writing books for teenagers Summary One Fat Summer by Robert Lipsyte is a very good book for people that feel insecure about themselves and have low self-esteem In the book a young boy name Bobby who overcomes his fears of being fat and being bullied by Willie one that is much stronger then him physically but not emotionally The basic theme of this story is to stand up for yourself no matter the situation Willie the antagonist of the story accidentally makes Bobby overcome his fears and stand up to him In a way Willie could be a protagonist because he helps Bobby overcome his fears Willie is a crazy person that doesnt know what he is doing It all started in the summer when Bobby an overweight fifteen year old is embarrassed to take his clothes off and swim in the beach because he is embarrassed that people would make
