Confederation vs Federal Model Society often shifts ideals due to a catalytic event or events that forces a change To shift the way a government works obviously has to show many flaws What happened at the onset of America was too many flaws in the confederation system So out of necessity the framers shifted from a confederation to a federal model to lessen the confusion of both the central government and the people A confederation is where a government takes stock in the belief that states possess most of the power governing a nation A document written under the confederation was the Articles of Confederation With an altruistic intent the framers had both good points and bad The good points of this document is it provided a utilitarian state the greatest good for the greatest number By this point the peoples problems can be addressed by a governing power closer to them With the autonomy of each state the probability of the peoples rights getting infringed upon is less likely than if the power was vested in the national government The bad points exist mainly because of what was left out that hindered the government from placing order in this nation One point is the lack of military power to suppress any rebellious uprising within the land An example of this is when Shays Rebellion arose the government had no power to stop the act of aggression once it escalated to the point where it did Another bad point is the failure to regulate interstate commerce Interstate commerce entails one currency an underlying premise of laws and the power for the national government to tax With the national government unable to regulate these certain aspects of society the order necessary to form a decent country was not achieved A federal model places more power in the national government while still reserving some power to the states It is almost like the federal government
