Traditions are sometimes seen as repeated practices by a particular group of people or community over a long period of time making it to become a custom or law binding those individuals within that community or group Some traditions may be good while others may be bad some traditions are maintain to keep the bond of community spirit while other are kept for merriment making In The Lottery According to Shirley Jackson repeated traditional beliefs and customs ignorantly turn to block the moral reasoning of the people believing in thae said tradition It hurts when you discover in the story that people stone their fellow men to death ignorantly because of a tradition that has been existing from generation to generation without any question about it However as the paper progresses I will be given more analysis of the negative effects of tradition in The Lottery by Shirley JacksonFirstly it is disturbing when an intellectual see a bunch of people acting like fools with no sense of direction The stone tradition in The Lottery is carried out by adults even who have refuse to think logically even to the extend where children are equally participating in it For instance Bobby Martin has already stuffed his pockets full of stones and the other boys soon followed his example Jackson 388 Here Jackson is trying to make us understand that this tradition has been on from generation to generation until it has come to the point where the teenagers are the first to start gathering stones ignorantly as opposed to the eldersSecondly Jackson makes us to understand that there is the unwillingness for people to reject old traditional practices Despite all the bad effects of The Lottery the villagers still continue to practice it ignorantly without any sense of direction nobody wants to reason what is going on or question it Mr Adams said to Old man Warner over in the north village they are talking about
