Bridget's feedback:
"This is a good start, and as you move forward, you can use the central thesis and your roundup of textual evidence to refine the analysis. First, I recommend rereading the story carefully, as it has a lot of ambiguous moments; in particular, check the reason given by the story for her confinement. Second, the historical context versus the present is not clear due to the use of verb tense. Start any commentary or description of gender politics in the time of the author's writing. You can go from there using clear signposting to guide the reader.
The current draft relies heavily on direct quotes, some of which are quite long. This can overwhelm your argument and ideas, implying a loss of control. Vet each quote for impact: direct quotations should be used to make a point beyond describing what is happening, and watch out for moments when you follow up a quote with a reiteration of what the quotation said. For the latter, consider if the quotation or your own summary works better for the argumentation."
