The 1930s The 30s was a rough decade for America The stock market had just crashed and the country was in depression War was breaking out in Europe a New Deal was being made and scandals were everywhere The thirties brought the country many hardships but it also brought it together due to the fact that we had to work together to pull through the hard times Politics- There were two presidents in the thirties The first was Herbert Hoover whom served from 1929-1933 During the first year of his term the stock market crashed and the country fell into depression He was called the do-nothing president by some because his efforts to help the economy didnt do much On March 4 1933 Franklin D Roosevelt was inaugurated into office with a promise of bringing the country out of depression FDR took immediate action to help the country He started the New Deal to boost the economy His efforts helped the economy to grow once again until 1937 when the country fell into another depression that lasted for another year However he was respected for his efforts to help the country Some new laws were passed and some were changed during this decade The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act was passed in June of 1930 It raised tariffs which increased prices putting the country deeper into depression It was petitioned not to be passed but it was despite the complaints In 1933 The Twenty-First Amendment was passed that repealed prohibition which made the consumption of alcohol legal again Another law that was passed in the thirties was the Neutrality Act which made us neutral in the conflict in Europe that would turn into WWII FDR also passed the US Social Security Act in 1934 which helped many Americans who couldnt work There were two main issues that were being discussed in the 1930s One was the Depression It was every politicians goal to
