Kevin Zavada English 103 Brad Rogers Movie Review Final December 20 2000 THE IGNORANCE IN CASABLANCA In the movie Casablanca the main character Rick as well as his bar Ricks Place represent what it was to be an American in the 1940s The country was undergoing a drastic change at this time period and there was a great deal of ignorance as to what the future held due to the fact of a war Rick and his bar symbolized this Rick symbolizes Americans because of his willing to help the under dog This is shown in the scene where Rick helps a young couple at his Casino to get the money to pay for transfer papers to get to America where they will be safe The young girl pleads with Rick because the Police Chief has promised her the papers in return for sexual favors which she doesnt want to take part in because she doesnt want to be unfaithful to her husband Following the scene the Police Chief tells Rick that he always knew that he was sentimental at heart This is a complete change in Ricks personality as a cold and somewhat cynical person However his internal need to help the weak overcome the strong comes out which exemplifies his American values Ricks Place is also a microcosm of America in the late 1930s and early 40s The appearance of the bar is that it is a happy place when actually most of the customers are uncomfortable and unsure They are unsure because they dont know what their future holds in concern to the war The environment is also very tense in the bar This shows what it was like to live in America because the countrys citizens also did not know what was in store for them They did not know whether or not they would be involved in a war or if they wanted to be involved in
