What a crazy world we seem to be living in today In a world where people are killed hated and discriminated against on a daily basis its amazing that some people can actually get along Although discouraged at times by things such as failed marriages abusive couples and superficial friendships the majority of the worlds population still has the internal desire to be connected to someone and to enjoy a long successful relationship The question is what is it that makes a relationship successful What does it take to be involved with someone in a meaning way After numerous attempts at finding that perfect relationship I have discovered that understanding yourself knowing what you and your significant other want and your own willingness to change are key factors in determining the longevity of your relationship Being single we seem to think that we know everything about ourselves When youre alone you learn to live with yourself and it isnt until you get into a relationship that you actually learn to acknowledge the flaws that exist in each and every one of us Think of Freud and compare yourself to his iceberg model of the id ego and superego When you present yourself to someone they see the small tip of the iceberg above the surface of the water but what lies beneath are the things that make up who you are These are the things that your significant other will see once you get into a relationship Putting up a false image of yourself isnt going to work forever When you do get involved in a relationship both sides act like a mirror As you fall in love you reflect the things that you like in each other but at the same time you reflect the bad Although its not always fun to sit and talk about the bad things I have learned that hearing about my faults helps me understand them and even grow
