The Attraction of the Bad Guy Ever since I saw my first gangstermobster movie it has been my favorite genre of film For me it started with characters from Goodfellas Henry Jimmy Tommy and Paulie and their ruthless criminal ways Why is it that the audience is attracted to these characters Darth Vader in Star Wars was even a favorite character of mine Audience are attracted to these characters for the same reason they are attracted to Griffin Mill from The Player and Vito and Michael Corleone from the Godfather Even though all of these characters have done life long acts of evil we still look up to them In the Godfather I looked up to Don Vito Corleone It is very ironic that he is a cold-blooded murderer and still he shows many sympathetic characteristics On a personal level he has strong morals and appears to be a good person Through the entire movie the outside perspective of what people think of the Corleone family is never shown and the only police that we see are the ones that are paid by the mob We are to just assume the things that Vito does to people they are never mentioned or seen first hand in the entire movie So from the viewers perspective the Don lives the ultimate life style He can take revenge on someone without lifting a finger He is rich he is above the law and has the power of an important politician Do you spend time with your family Good Because a man that doesnt spend time with his family can never be a real man said Don Vito Corleone He carries himself like the ultimate gentlemen and family man Audiences obsession with Griffin Mill is not as strong as Don Vito Corleone The attraction comes more from jealousy of his status Who does not want to be a top executive at a production company He has hundreds of
