In both the book and movie Montana 1948 Larry Watson and A River Runs Through It-Robert Redford There is a character that ends up destroying himself without knowing that they are doing so Both characters Frank and Paul die at of the story from earlier mistakes made in the story In the book Montana 1948 the character Frank is portrayed as the perfect person he was a war hero and then held a reasonable job as a doctor Frank grew up in a very respectable family The Haydens who name was held high in the community Frank after giving his bothers house sitter Marie Little Soldier a check up since she was sick is later accused of raping Marie who happened Indian Wesley Franks bother is the local town sheriff and is the person who has to do the investigation Frank is then accused of not only raping Marie but other Indian girls as well Marie then finally seems to get better than the very next day dies but Frank was seen running from the house which Marie was staying at leaving him for the blame of the death of Marie Wesley now torn between doing the right thing and family finally chooses to lock up his brother in his basement in order to let him keep his pride or what is left of it after awhile of being locked in the basement Frank decides to take his own life which by everyone else is said to be selfish but is the opposite belief of the narrator David Wesleys son In theory it is believed that Frank never believed that what he did to Marie was wrong In the movie A River Runs Through It the character Paul is portrayed as a wild and outgoing character taking risk and pushing his limits like when he and his brother Norman went over the rapids with their little boat Norman goes off to college and returns years
