The book Citizen Soldiers by Stephen E Ambrose is an unforgettable testament of the WWII generation Citizen Soldiers tells the hardships and triumphs of the United States military from the Normandy Beaches to the surrender of Germany Stephen Ambrose interviewed many GIs and officers Through these interviews Stephen Ambrose gave the reader a first hand experience on how WWII was fought At the beginning of the book Ambrose described the frustration of the soldiers during The Battle for France As the GIs began to fight they realized that they were not ready to fight the Germans The German tanks seemed indestructible The United States military was receiving very heavy casualties There was almost a one hundred percent turnover in junior officers This caused many soldiers to be without leaders But the GIs of WWII still fought and maintained moral even without leadership After The Battle for France the fighting moved to the German Border By this time there were many lives taken and WWII seemed like it was going to be a stalemate One of the hardest times for the American soldiers was the holiday season On December 25th the urge to attend services and pray was overwhelming Every man in the battle German or American who could went to church After the harsh winter at the German border the United States moved its way into Germany Moral was getting higher between the GIs The soldiers new they were getting closer to capturing Germany As the US moved through Germany they encountered many dead prisoners soldiers who suffered Lt Hugh Carey who became governor of New York in the 1980s wrote I stood with other American soldiers before Nordhausen I inhaled the stench of death and the barbaric calculated cruelty I made a vow as I stood there that as long as I live I will fight for peace for the rights of mankind and against any form of hate bias and
