The Catcher in the RyeDoes Holden need outside influence from other characters in the book to grow up The answer is a definite yes Within Catcher in the Rye J D Salinger uses Holden Caulfield to depict a confused teen who through interactions with other characters grows and matures Holden the main character has many different types of relationships with men and women throughout the book Some relationships are more short-lived than others and some are more intimate Most importantly his relationships with men women and his family always relate back to him and reveal something about himself The relationships with men although generally shorter and more violent reveal a lot of Holdens character and how he differs from the average guy His relationship with women is as equally revealing about him Holdens family shows two extremes in the case of relationships wanting to be nothing like his father and everything like his little sister Holdens character is shaped and defined more clearly to the reader as the book progresses Overall these interactions and conflicts with men and women help Holden grow When Holden Caulfield says he has problems with women he means just this The thing is most of the time when you are coming pretty close to doing it with a girl she keeps telling you to stop The trouble with me is I stop Most guys dontPg92 In the opinion of anyone who is not a sex offender this is by no means an actual problem However from the viewpoint of Holden that is the only reason his quasi-friend Stradlater has had sex and he hasnt When Holden interacts with women it is easy to tell that he definitely takes all the women in the book a lot differently than the men Whether its having lower expectations from them or a higher degree of innocence on their part Holden gives them a lot more room for error and a lot more pity
