The Cathedral of St John the Divine is the Episcopalian answer to St Patricks Cathedral St John the Divines is the worlds largest cathedral and observation alone of its beautiful external artwork is a rewarding experience The west faade of St John the Divines is covered with sculptures each portraying a different event The west faade resembles that of Amiens Cathedral located in Amiens France Each cathedral has three main arched entryways with the center entry obviously the largest and a rose colored stain glass window above the main entryway St John the Divines however is much larger The two smaller entryways are located on the north and south ends of the west faade The north entryway has four sculptures on either side of the doors and a trumeau of St John the Divine As well the middle and south entryways each have a trumeau of St John the Divine The ornate peripheral sculptures are not yet started on the south entryway On the south entryways tympanum there is depicted Mary holding baby Jesus the central tympanum an adult Jesus and the north entryways tympanum has depicted a crucified Jesus The middle entryway has two doors which close to and join in the center That entryway is also known as the Portal of Paradise Each door is covered with metal plates portraying biblical events the north door being Old Testament and the south door the New Testament The pattern or Old Testament and New Testament is repeated throughout the faade Sculptures of apostles are on either side of the doors The apostle sculptures on the north side are from the Old Testament and the on the south from the New Testament The apostles represent the future and the past Above the apostles are smaller lightly colored sculptures also from the Old and New Testament The coloring of the most external sculptures has apparently faded from weathering The middle entryways trumeau is
