Jacob CartyMrs Poetschke English OACI 7 December 2000 Bold and Beautiful Bathsheba Bathsheba Everdene the central character of the novel is a beautiful young woman whom must chose one of three suitors As a woman in the nineteenth century she has to struggle to maintain her place in the world of men From the first view of the Queen of the corn-market to the final description of her as Gabriels wife she seems to be the center of everyones attention To create this alluring but capable being Hardy imploys both implicit and explicit techniques Bathsheba is presented with honor and plenty of self-esteem throughout the majority of the novel While she is introducing herself to the workers she is in the attire of wealthy Lady dressed daintily in one of her silk mourning dress This representation of Bathsheba just gives the workers the impression that she is just a lady on a power trip A different first impression is given to Bathsheba during her first public appearance here she is interpreted much more professional and eager armed with sample-bags Yet another image of her enthusiasm for success is described in her face expression as she talks to some anonymous man Many of the same qualities are given to Bathsheba through the manner of her speech As she introduces herself to her workers she takes initiative in attempting to convince them that she is able to run the farm stating I shall be up before you are awake I shall be afield before you are up and I shall have breakfasted before you are afield In short I will astonish you all She also admits to them that she does not know her farming powers or talents thus revealing her honesty With this said some of the townsfolk agree that she is too headstrong Yes tis a pity shes so headstrong Through the demonstration of Bathshebas actions many more quality traits are acquired
