The novel Wuthering Heights written by Emily Bront takes place in northern England in an isolated rural area The main characters involved are residents of two opposite households Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange These two families are different in numerous aspects of their personalities and lifestyles It is centered on three dominant characters Catherine Earnshaw Edgar Linton and Heathcliff In the novel Catherines has a difficult choice to make but actually her decision is already made in her heart unconsciously She is forced to distinguish the difference between her love for Heathcliff and her love for Edgar As children Heathcliff and Catherine are the best of friends a friendship that turns to love with maturity Healthcliff is Catherines ideal mate until a certain incident occurs While adventuring out of Wuthering Heights they are caught spying At the same time as there attempting to escape from the Lintons dogs Catherine is bitten and falls ill Heathcliff is sent away for this but its decided that Catherine stay with the Lintons while she recovers from her bite It is during this stay that she is exposed to a different type of household and grows close to the young Edgar Linton Cathy begins to be attracted to the mannerly ways and the social graces of Thrushcross Grange and is led to abandon her true nature Upon returning to Wuthering Heights she becomes much more haughty and feminine and scoffs at the unclean rough appearance of Heathcliff This scars him emotionally for the rest of the relationship and begins their deterioration and obsession of their love for each other Catherine became so absorbed in her new life that she forgets about Heathcliff and the pain he is feeling She became so preoccupied because Edgar would offer her a civilized socially acceptable and materialistic advantage She knows that marrying Heathcliff would cause them both a lifetime of misery as they would live as beggars Catherine did not want
