Of all the rounded characters in the Lord of the Flies which includes the civilized Ralph the savage Jack the sadistic Roger and the whiny intellectual Piggy Simon proves to be the most rounded character as he acts like a Christ-figure in the rapidly deteriorating island society This essay will provide an in-depth examination of the character of Simon focussing on his loyalty compassion insight and self-sacrifice One of Simons most remarkable traits is his loyalty Simon remains a faithful and steadfast friend to both Piggy and Ralph even when most of the other boys go off to Castle Rock to join the savage tribe of Jack and his hunters Simon is the only boy in the novel that is always loyal and willing to help at any opportunity He greatly displays his loyalty helpfulness and dedication to the common good when he is the sole character that aids Ralph in building the huts This loyalty is distinctly Christ-like since Jesus always stood by the side of his disciples Another one of Simons noteworthy character traits is his insight Throughout the novel Simon demonstrates that he has the knowledge to look beyond the obvious in order to seek the truth Simons insight becomes evident when he is the first to realize that the real beast is not external it is not a creature that lives on the mountain At one of the assemblies in which the boys vote on the possibility of a beastie or ghost Simon suggests Maybe there is a beast Maybe its only us Chapter 5 pg 80 In this quote Simon is very insightful and recognizes that the beast represents the primal instinct of savagery that exists within each of the boys Simonss compassion is another attribute that makes him more rounded than the other characters Throughout the novel Simon shows compassion to the weaker littluns who often get ill treated by the older boys
