A single characteristic of a main character can be the force that shapes a story Many times the certain aspect of a character leads to all the events of a story Sometimes the outcome can be good and at other times bad Sometimes the trait leads to the destruction of another character or the destruction of the main character himselfherself Whatever the outcome the story is it will be one that most people will be able to relate to The Cask of Amontillado is about the main characters need for revenge and his manipulative way of seeking it Montresor has been insulted by Fortunato too many times and has finally decided to seek vengeance During a carnival he drags a drunken Fortunato through his wine cellar to find the cask of Amontillado a type of sherry Montresor leads his guest through the damp catacombs using reverse psychology to urge him forward He tells Fortunato to turn back saying that he will catch a cold because of the dampness knowing that Fortunato will never leave He opens a bottle of wine to drink to his long life when Fortunato does not turn back As they continue through the bone-ridden catacombs Montresor reveals his trowel and tells Fortunato of his motto No one attacks me with impunity but Fortunato does not think much of these things and they continue in the pursuit of the cask of Amontillado Finally he leads Fortunato to an alcove where he ties him and begins to build a wall sealing the entrance Though he becomes sick in the process he completes the deed and leaves Fortunato to die in the cold damp dark wine cellar where no person would ever find him His need for revenge leads to the punishment of Fortunato as the climax of the story
