Do Children Have Rights in America Most seem to think that the childrens rights movement in America is fairly new It has actually been in existance since about the mid-1600s Children in the colonies had rights that entitled them to have the necessities of life a start in life and freedom from excessive abuse Hawkes 1 Whats important about this precedent is that it sets up our own ideas of how children should be treated Furthermore these unique ideas are unlike any in the Old World countries In 1852 the first compulsory school attendance law was passed leading the way for children to be educated by law instead of by the choice of their families Starting in 1890-1920 the Progressive Era an age of reform in childrens rights such as juvenile courts and child labor laws brought about efforts of social action for the less fortunate 26 By the late 1960s the childrens rights movement came to age in America bringing about vigorous public debates about the needs of children Counsel and due process in juvenile courts become standard The period since 1960 is a period of expansion and redefinition of childrens rights in America 97 By the year 1990 advocates made major advancements toward childrens rights The government of the United States created numerous laws child advocate groups and social and government agencies Even though great strides are being made toward protecting children and their rights within the last fifty years we are still failing many children in our society When we speak of childrens rights we are speaking of what is in the best interest of the children Children have the right to live in an environment thats safe and caring to have adequate food shelter clothing and medical care and to have a decent education free from the threat of violence Most importantly they should have the right to be heard by the courts of law with adequate representation
